Over the past two weeks Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools students in the Field to Fork program visited Fuel Pizza restaurants around Charlotte to make healthy, vegetarian pizzas. They brought fresh spinach, some basil and oregano picked straight from their gardens. The tomatoes and peppers planted back in April weren't quite ready to be picked. It's always a challenge to get a ripe tomato by May 30! Someone will be lucky to eat them later this summer.
At the restaurants, Fuel Pizza staff taught the classes how to make sauce with fresh basil and how to roll out the crust. After a pizza-making demonstration each student received their own ball of whole wheat dough. Pizzas were topped with freshly made sauce, and students were offered basil, spinach, onions, peppers and tomatoes as well as low-fat cheese.

Everyone had a blast on the field trips. We learned to make healthy pizza that tastes delicious. Many of the students tried new vegetable toppings for the first time. Thanks Fuel Pizza for having all the students into your restaurant to make pizza. This was an unforgettable experience!
